Phlogiston is an anomalous, highly volatile substance exclusively synthesised and wielded by the Chimeras. Functioning as both a biological weapon and defensive mechanism, Phlogiston exhibits characteristics comparable to a hybrid of kerosene and napalm, while also displaying unique properties not replicable in chemistry HERE.

Properties

In its dormant state, Phlogiston appears as a fluid or vapor that auto-ignites upon exposure to atmospheric oxygen, regardless of ambient temperature or pressure. It can manifest in a wide spectrum of colours; however, chromatic variation has no correlation with chemical potency or function.

Phlogiston is capable of sustained combustion in aqueous environments, maintaining flame and heat output under full submersion, an attribute that parallels historical accounts of Greek Fire, though significantly more intense and stable.

Species-Specific Interaction

  • Chimera Immunity: Phlogiston is biologically inert to all Chimeras. It does not cause thermal damage, toxic effects, or cellular disruption in these species, enabling close-range or direct-contact deployment without self-harm.
  • Non-Chimera Effects: In contrast, Phlogiston is extremely corrosive and cytotoxic to all non-Chimeras. Contact with the substance results in rapid tissue degradation, neurochemical shock, and chemical burns. Inhalation of Phlogiston vapours induces severe internal damage and system failure, regardless of species or environmental adaptations.

Anomalous Interactions

One of Phlogiston’s most significant anomalous effects is its temporary ability to disrupt the Anima. When deployed, Phlogiston can create short-lived breaches or “burned gaps” in the Anima, temporarily negating its influence in localised regions. These disruptions are self-repairing, with the Anima reasserting itself over time.
